Schools and colleges are working hard to prepare young people for the world of work, but they cannot do it alone. Work experience is an opportunity to build a valuable partnership between business and education.
Work experience enables learners to:
- Gain an insight into the world of work.
- Have the opportunity to investigate aspects of employment.
- Carry out assignments as part of vocational courses.
- Plan their future in a more realistic and informed way.
Benefits for the employer:
For many young people a work placement is their first experience of the world of employment. It also presents employers with the chance to:
- Contribute to training and motivating young people for the future.
- Develop recruitment channels through links with schools and colleges.
- Influence young people’s career choices.
- Develop the coaching skills of staff as they mentor students in the workplace.
- Raise the profile of their organisation in the local community.
Young people need to build employability skills in order to prepare them for the world of work.
These skills cannot be fully developed in the classroom so experience in the workplace is essential. A high quality work placement can support a student in a variety of ways including:
- Increasing confidence, self esteem and independence
- Improving motivation for learning
- Learning new skills
- Raising aspirations
- Demonstrating personal qualities
- Working with adults other than teachers
- Understanding health and safety in the workplace
- Gaining accreditation towards qualifications
- Providing evidence for employment or further education interview
Finding a work placement is an important part of the learning experience. The school co-ordinator will provide you with a guide showing you how you can support your child in doing this.
As you probably know, work experience is now important whatever route you want to take in life; further education, employment or university.
At Year 10 the aim of work experience is to help you understand the world of work in a general sense, to build your confidence and help you learn about the importance of punctuality, teamwork etc.
Work experience in Year 12 is more focused and relevant to the career that you are aiming for or as part of the course you are studying.
In both cases finding your own placement is all part of the learning experience.
Your school co-ordinator will provide you with a guide to help you find a placement and there are other tips available on the resources page.
